Since 2014, Real has been working with groups of young people from the Waikato and Bay of Plenty regions to research issues young people experience when it comes to their sexual health and wellbeing so they could develop online resources that support them to make safe, informed decisions.
After gathering some of these insights, REAL approached Curative to help prepare materials in a way that truly resonates with young people. Following our co-design approach, and belief that people are the experts in their own lives, we embarked on a three day innovation sprint at Waikeri Marae in Ngaruawahia with 25 young people, the REAL team and industry music producers.
The result is The Message – an awesome song created, written, recorded and filmed by all of us at the Marae. The story that unfolds in the music video, and the lyrics of the song have all been designed to help young New Zealanders share the message that it’s okay to say no, or be told no, to sex.
